QnA

Why did you choose your specific programme at SDC?

I have always had an ambition to work with large-scale strategy work. Innovation Management was the best option, combining my career ambitions with my passion for travel. While studying at SDC, I had ample opportunities to travel and explore different parts of the world, primarily within China, while conducting research.

What are the most important academic skills/knowledge you have acquired during your master’s?

Critical thinking and the ability to work independently are the most crucial skills I acquired during my master’s. I developed a skillset that allows me to delve into problems and solve them autonomously, without needing constant guidance. Learning to approach challenges in a structured manner, even in areas where I lacked expertise, has been invaluable, particularly in my role as a consultant where encountering new challenges is common.

What have you otherwise learned?

I've learned that I'm capable of accomplishing a lot independently and collaboratively. Additionally, my time at SDC was incredibly enjoyable and remains unmatched since leaving China, despite living in four countries since then, including Bali.

What is the study environment like?

As everyone will attest, the atmosphere at the SDC building is fantastic. It feels like stepping into a movie, creating a completely different experience compared to studying in Denmark. It's also beneficial that those who choose SDC and move to China are eager to socialize and embrace a new lifestyle rather than sticking with childhood friends.

What is it like to live in China?

Living abroad energizes you to engage actively with your surroundings—visiting temples, learning new skills, and meeting new people. The cultural contrast adds novelty to everything I do. Moreover, the food is exceptional, and people are incredibly friendly and interested in interacting.

Furthermore, because China is relatively affordable compared to Denmark, living there allows you to enjoy a higher standard of living.

What do you think about the physical environment of SDC?

While the dormitories weren't ideal, the campus itself is remarkable. Being within walking distance of one of the Seven Wonders of the World and surrounded by natural beauty means you never feel far from home.

What is the social life like?

I met my current girlfriend of four years at SDC, and many of my closest friends are from my time in China. I feel incredibly fortunate to have met such wonderful people during my time there.

What did you do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I learned to Longboard, started a relationship, attended events with my new friends, worked out in SDC’s gym, and had almost daily tea parties with my dorm mates.

Where did you work on your thesis project and what did you gain from it?

I collaborated with a German consulting agency based in Beijing for my project. For my Master's thesis, I conducted interviews with individuals from Rockwool, The Red Cross, F&H, and CODAN.

How has your time at SDC/your MSc programme impacted your career?

It facilitated my first job opportunity, and I am now aiming to pursue a Ph.D. at SDC later this year.

What would you wish you had known before applying to an SDC programme?

Everyone I knew who attended had positive experiences, even those who ultimately decided to leave. They all cherished their time in China.

Other thoughts and reflections?

Some individuals maintained daily contact with their partners back home during their time in China. This could be challenging for both partners, as moving to China represents a significant and positive life change. Being continually tied to events and people from home might hinder fully embracing the moment and forming new friendships.

Would you recommend others to choose the programme?

Absolutely. While you can always stay in your home country and spend time with your existing friends, the opportunity to meet a new group of people who are equally eager to make friends is unique. It's a fantastic way to discover the best version of yourself. Despite having never been to China before, my experience was overwhelmingly positive.
