Students explore regional development in Ningxia

06 June 2025

Students in the Public Management and Social Development programme recently took a four-day field trip to Yinchuan, in China’s Ningxia region. The visit provided a unique opportunity to connect academic theory with real-world policy and economic development.

The trip focused on Ningxia’s emerging wine industry—an increasingly important player in China’s export economy. Students toured several wineries, learning firsthand how local and regional policymaking has supported economic growth in the area. In addition to tasting regional wines, they engaged in discussions with government officials and industry representatives who are at the heart of economic planning process.

‘The trip explored the practical realities of policymaking,’ said Eddie Ashbee, who heads the programme. ‘Classroom learning is essential, but it’s even more important to get out and see contemporary China.’
