First day of studies
What is it like to meet your fellow students for the first time? At SDC it is not just about meeting new people, it is also about meeting a new culture
First day of studies was also the first time for all of the students on SDC's seven programmes to met each other. The introductions were designed to break the ice through a combination of academic and social activities.
Meet two of the students who took the time to elaborate on their respective cross cultural meetings.

What was it like to meet your new classmates?
I came with no expectations, so first off we will be trying to figure each other out. I was really excited about meeting our classmates, and they are really nice and friendly. At first it was a bit hard to break the ice, but after we went to lunch together they really wanted to talk.
What do you expect from being in a cross cultural class room?
In the long run I want to make close friendships and I want us to be like a big happy family. I believe my Chinese co-students will be a great resource both academically and socially, as they can help me understand Chinese environmental conditions and show me the customs and the country.
Why did you come here?
I came here to study in an environment of many nationalities and expand my horizon, and I hope to gain a new perspective on what goes on around the world.

What was it like to meet your new classmates?
I was very excited to meet them. I felt nervous about meeting them, and sometimes I lack the confidence to speak because of my lack of experience with foreign students.
What do you expect from being in a cross cultural class room?
I think we can learn from the foreign students who are very active in the class room, and maybe they can learn about diligence and listening from us. Today I was encouraged to participate in discussions, and I think I contributed well to our group work in spite of nervousness.
Why did you come here?
I came to SDC to learn new methods of learning. I want to be efficient in class and learn as much as possible, and then after class we can all go out and do social things. I want to have a good relationship with classmates and learn about the little things one by one.
